How To Elope at Dunluce Castle: The Complete Guide For US Couples
If you’ve been dreaming of ditching the traditional wedding and running off to elope somewhere that looks like it belongs in a fantasy movie, Dunluce Castle might be the perfect spot for you. An ancient castle nestled on top of rugged coastal cliffs, with the Atlantic waves crashing below, it makes for the dreamiest backdrop for your Ireland elopement.
This page covers everything you need to know to easily plan an elopement at Dunluce Castle, including prices, the best months to elope and all of the logistics. As a local elopement photographer and planner, I have helped plan and photograph over 60+ elopements here on the Causeway Coast, including many at Dunluce Castle during all seasons and weather conditions!
How to Book Your Dunluce Castle Elopement
When booking your Dunluce Castle elopement, you aren’t booking use of the castle itself. All ceremonies take place on a private field overlooking the Castle. You cannot have your ceremony inside the castle, however you can get a permit for wedding photos inside for an additional £60. This permit is granted from the National Trust and is separate from the private field.
Your booking includes:
- Exclusive access to the field overlooking the castle during a 2 hour time slot.
- Access to a small cottage which can be used before and after the ceremony for drinks / gathering guests and as a potential back-up option.
- Being driven onto the field in a 4x4 truck & a large seated trailer for larger guest counts.
- Access to private parking & a bathroom.
Not included in your booking:
- Seating (Can be arranged with Dunluce Farm at extra cost)
- Access to the Castle
You will need to reach out directly to Dunluce Farm Elopements. It is best to have a date, or a few dates in mind when inquiring through their website so you can compare availability. Your photographer will advise you on what time is best for your ceremony to take place - so sometimes its best to be in communication with them, or have them secured before you solidify your booking with Dunluce Farm.
Arriving at Dunluce Castle on Your Elopement Day: What To Expect
When you arrive at Dunluce Castle Carpark, you'll be directed to private parking behind the cottage. From here you'll meet the team, your celebrant and photographer inside where you'll be offered a drink and have some time to go over any Ceremony questions with your celebrant. If you have guests, they will head into the trailer to be transported over to the field. You and your partner have the choice to go together in the 4x4 truck or go separately if you're doing a first look during the ceremony.
Once the ceremony comes to a close, you have time with your photographer to take any group photos or portraits you'd like before being driven back to the cottage! Typically, we allow guests to leave after the group photos are finished so you and your partner have some time alone with the photographer.
After portraits, you'll head back to the cottage for another celebratory whiskey before gathering your belongings and heading to your next adventure! All of this typically takes place within a 2 hour window unless extra time has been scheduled for a picnic or longer celebration.
How Much Does It Cost?
Below is the updated 2026 Pricing to rent the field for your elopement ceremony. All pricing is in Pounds Sterling.
Currently no deposits are required to secure bookings. Full amount is due on the day of the elopement which can be made easily via Wise for international bank transfers.
Wedding Photography Inside The Castle
You can take wedding photos inside the castle, depending on opening times. This is booked separately through the National Trust and must be planned in advance. There is a £60 fee for wedding photography on the site and this includes bringing up to 10 guests inside for group photos etc.
Other Expenses to Consider
While eloping is almost always more budget friendly than planning a traditional wedding, it's still really important to go in with a clear picture of what your overall costs might look like! The Dunluce Castle booking fee is just the starting point, and depending on how you want to build your day, there are a few other things to factor into your budget. The beauty of an elopement though is that you have complete control over where you spend and where you save, and there really is no wrong way to do it!
Photography and Videography
Probably the most important investment you'll make for your elopement day and honestly the one I'd encourage you to prioritise above almost everything else. Your photos and film are the thing you'll have forever and a photographer who knows the area, understands the light, and is experienced working in all kinds of Irish weather conditions will make an enormous difference to your experience and your gallery. Videography is a really beautiful addition too if it's within your budget, especially for capturing the sounds of the vows, the movement and the wind in a way that photos simply can't!
Hair and Makeup
Having your hair and makeup done professionally for your elopement day is so worth it! As I mention in the what to wear section, choosing a stylist who understands the environment and can build a look that will actually last through wind and weather is really important at Dunluce Castle specifically!
Florist
A beautiful bouquet at Dunluce is honestly one of my favourite things and something I'd really encourage every couple to consider! As well as looking absolutely incredible against the backdrop of the castle and the cliffs, having something to hold does so much for nerves in front of the camera. A good local florist will be able to create something beautiful that will withstand any conditions.
Celebrant & Legal Fees
If you're planning to have a ceremony led by someone other than yourselves or a family member, budgeting for a professional celebrant is really worthwhile! A great celebrant brings so much warmth and structure to your ceremony and takes all the pressure off you both so you can just be completely present. As I mention in the ceremonies section, I have a trusted list of celebrants I love on the North Coast that I share with every couple I work with!
If going the legal route, there may be administrative fees involved with giving your notice to the registrar.
Wedding Cake
Not every eloping couple opts for a cake but if it's something that feels important to you, it's absolutely worth factoring in!
Accommodation
As I cover in the where to stay section, I'd really encourage you to think of your accommodation as more than just somewhere to sleep, and highly recommend splurging on somewhere special. A beautiful Airbnb with great natural light, interesting and unique decor, and maybe a bit of outdoor space can become a really significant part of your photography and your overall experience. It's one of those areas where spending a little more often makes a really big difference to your day!
Wedding Attire
Whether you're investing in a dream gown, or a beautifully tailored suit, your outfits are such an important part of your elopement day! Don't forget to factor in any alterations, accessories, and the practical extras like thermals, boots, and a warm layer for the cliff!
Flights and Transportation
For couples travelling from the US, flights are obviously one of the biggest costs to factor in! Flying into Dublin or Belfast International are your two main options, and car hire is pretty much essential for exploring the Causeway Coast easily. As I mention in the getting there section, I'd really recommend budgeting for a comfortable hire car and giving yourself plenty of time to enjoy the drive up the coast rather than rushing straight to Dunluce and back!
Travel Insurance/Wedding Insurance
Travel insurance for an international elopement is so worth having in place. Things happen that are completely outside of our control, flights get cancelled, bags get lost, people get sick, and when you're travelling all the way from the US to Northern Ireland for one of the most important days of your life, having that safety net underneath you makes everything feel so much more relaxed.
Activities
One of the most magical things about eloping on the Causeway Coast is that it sits right at of one of the most stunning and activity rich areas in all of Ireland! You have access to boat tours, helicopter tours, bespoke outdoor picnics, horseback riding, sea swimming, rock climbing and surfing. You have so many incredible locations to explore, including many more ancient castle ruins, a scenic rope bridge, the famous Giants Causeway and the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in Bushmills.
Tips
Something I get asked a lot is whether or not its customary to tip wedding vendors in Northern Ireland. While it's always appreciated, it's never expected - so it's not something you have to consider in the budget unless you really want to! As an elopement photographer, I personally really love when couples bring something from their hometown or handmade gifts. I've received so many thoughtful "tips" from crocheted gloves to post-cards to chick-fil-a sauce (I'm so serious, I'm a huge fan).

From the moment you enquire I'll be helping you find the right vendors, the right locations, and the right accommodation, as well as sending you everything you need to feel completely prepared and excited rather than stressed. By the time your elopement day arrives, all you have to do is show up and enjoy every single second of it!

When to Elope at dunluce Castle
Picking the right season and time to elope at Dunluce Castle can make a huge difference to your overall experience. Every couple is different, so your ideal time of year will depend on how you feel about crowds, what kind of light you're after, and how much flexibility you have around your ceremony timing.
The Seasons at a Glance
Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the most underrated times to elope on the Causeway Coast. The tourist crowds haven't arrived yet, the grass is a vivid emerald green, and the days are getting noticeably longer as you move through April and May. The weather can still be brisk, but you'll often get bright, clear days with beautiful soft light and very few other people around.
Summer (June–August)
Summer brings the longest days and the best chance of warm, dry weather - but it's also the busiest time on the North Coast. Car parks are full, the roads get congested, and vendor availability at weekends becomes much tighter. If you have your heart set on a summer elopement, a weekday booking is strongly recommended. The pros are the late sunsets make for stunning golden hour light well into the evening.
Autumn (September–November)
September in particular is a hidden gem. The tourists have mostly gone home, the light takes on a warmer, more golden quality, and you often get dramatic skies that summer can't match. Temperatures drop as you move into October and November, so layers are essential, but for couples who love moody, atmospheric images, autumn is hard to beat.
Winter (December–February)
Winter elopements at Dunluce are genuinely special, and completely underestimated. It's quiet and beautifully wild out on the cliff. The trade-off is short days. Sunset in December is around 4pm, so timing needs careful planning. It's not for everyone, but if you love the idea of something intimate and dramatic, winter delivers.
Best Time of Day
The view at Dunluce is west-facing, which means the sun sets directly behind the castle. On a clear evening, this creates some of the most stunning light you'll find anywhere in Ireland. Warm, golden, and impossibly cinematic. Planning your ceremony to coincide with this light is almost always worth it.
That said, summer sunsets at Dunluce don't happen until after 10pm, which isn't always practical if you're bringing guests and want to head somewhere for dinner afterwards. For summer elopements with guests, I'd recommend scheduling your ceremony in the late afternoon, around 4-5PM, to strike the right balance. If it's just the two of you and you're feeling adventurous, ending the day with your vows after a full afternoon exploring the Causeway Coast is a wonderful option.
Here's a breakdown of approximate sunset times and the start of the best light window throughout the year:
Weather: Expect the Unexpected
Irish weather is famously unpredictable, and the Causeway Coast is no exception, if anything, it's even more so. My honest advice is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best! A little rain is practically a rite of passage.
The good news is that you have access to a small cottage by the parking lot which provides real shelter before and after your ceremony which is ideal if you're bringing guests. Out on the field itself, coverage is minimal (there's a small hay-bale trailer, which has served as an unlikely refuge more than once), so planning your attire with the season in mind is crucial.
In extreme conditions, ceremonies can be moved inside the cottage, but in six years of photographing elopements here, I've thankfully never had to do that. I have photographed in some seriously wild weather, though, so my strong advice is to work with vendors, especially a photographer, who are experienced in all conditions, confident making quick decisions, and always have a back-up plan ready.
Weekdays vs Weekends
Weekdays are by far the most popular choice for elopements at Dunluce, and for good reason. The Causeway Coast is quieter, parking is easier, and vendor availability is much better - particularly in summer when most wedding suppliers are fully booked at weekends throughout the peak season.
Dates to Avoid:
UK Bank Holidays
Public holidays, typically on Mondays. Locals head to the North Coast in numbers on long weekends, especially in summer. Worth avoiding where possible.
11th–12th July
The Twelfth is a significant period in Northern Ireland. Road closures, bonfires, and increased traffic across the region can affect travel and logistics.
North West 200 (Typically Mid-May)
One of the world's largest road racing events, held on public roads between Portrush, Portstewart, and Coleraine. The surrounding roads are closed during race days and the whole area is exceptionally busy for the week. Check the exact dates for your year.
How to get to dunluce Castle
Dunluce Castle is situated on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland. It’s a 1 hour drive from Belfast, and around 3 hours from Dublin. If you’re travelling from outside of Ireland, the easiest route might be to fly directly into Dublin and rent a car. You’ll be charged a cross-border insurance fee which is typically around €40 Euros. There are no border checks - but as of 2026, US citizens do need a Visa to visit the UK, so apply for this before your trip to Northern Ireland.
Flights from US
The cheapest direct flights into Dublin are from New York, Boston and Chicago with the cheapest months overall (during peak elopement season) are April, May, August and September. June and July you’ll see the prices hike as they are the busiest months for tourism.
You can also opt to fly to Belfast. However, if you’re coming from the US it may be easier and cheaper to fly into Dublin Airport. Either way, I highly recommend renting a car and driving.
The Drive to Dunluce
From Dublin Airport, the drive is super simple and straightforward. Apple & Google Maps will get you there! However if you have time, I recommend driving the Causeway Coastal Route. Instead of a straight shot to Portrush, you can take the scenic, coastal drive starting from Carrickfergus, where you can visit one of Ireland’s best preserved medieval castles. From here you’ll follow the Antrim coast, dotted along the way are some Game of Thrones filming locations, such as Cushendun Caves. This route will easily add an extra two hours onto your drive - but it’s worth it! It’s truly one of my favourite drives on the island.
*Once you cross the border, don’t forget that Northern Ireland uses MPH and GBP*

Types of ceremonies at Dunluce Castle

One of the things I love most about eloping at Dunluce Castle is how much freedom you actually have when it comes to your ceremony! There is no rulebook! Whether you want something legally binding, a symbolic celebration, or something unique and personal to you both, Dunluce Castle is the perfect spot for it all.
Legal vs Symbolic
This is probably the first big decision to make when you start planning, and it's one I get asked about a lot, especially from couples travelling from the US!
A legal ceremony is exactly what it sounds like. You leave Dunluce Castle officially and legally married! Unlike some popular elopement locations on the Causeway Coast, the private field at Dunluce Castle can actually facilitate a legally binding ceremony, which is really exciting and convenient!
A symbolic ceremony means the legal side of things is handled back home, before or after your trip. Your ceremony at Dunluce Castle is still completely real and meaningful, it's still your vows and ring exchange, it's just not the legal act itself. (Technically you can celebrate two wedding anniversaries this way!) This is actually the option most of my couples travelling from outside the UK choose, because it takes so much of the logistical stress out of the day. You get all of the magic without any of the paperwork!
The Legal Process for Couples Coming from Outside the UK
If you do want to make it fully legal at Dunluce, here's what you need to know! The process is very manageable but it does require a bit of planning in advance.
You'll need to give notice to the Registrar of Marriages in Northern Ireland at least 28 days before your ceremony, and no more than 12 months before. This means some paperwork needs to be submitted ahead of your trip, and depending on your circumstances you may need to be available for an interview with the registrar either in person or remotely. You'll also need to make sure your celebrant is a registered officiant recognised in Northern Ireland.
You’ll need two witnesses over the age of 18 present at your ceremony. This is a legal requirement and something that's easy to forget when you're in the early stages of planning. If you're eloping as just the two of you with no guests, don't panic! Your photographer, videographer, or staff on the field can act as witnesses for you.
Will The Marriage Be Legally Recognised Back Home?
This is honestly one of the most common questions I get from couples travelling from the US, and the answer is yes! A legal marriage that takes place in Northern Ireland is fully recognised in the United States. As long as your ceremony meets the legal requirements here, you'll go home officially married and your marriage certificate will be valid.
What Kind of Ceremony Can You Have?
This is where it gets really exciting! Whether you go legal or symbolic, the style and structure of your ceremony is almost entirely up to you. Some of my favourite Dunluce ceremonies have included:
Humanist ceremonies: Warm, personal, and completely non-religious. A humanist celebrant will work with you to create something that feels entirely like you, telling your story and guiding you through your vows in a really meaningful way.
Religious ceremonies: If faith is an important part of your relationship, this can absolutely be incorporated into your Dunluce ceremony. Just make sure your officiant is registered accordingly if you're going the legal route!
Handfasting: A beautiful ancient Celtic tradition where your hands are bound together with ribbon or cord as a symbol of your commitment. This is where the phrase "Tying the knot" comes from! The cord/ribbon can be fully customised with colours/fabrics of the couples choosing. It makes for a sentimental keepsake after the ceremony, which you can choose to display afterwards!
The Quaich ceremony: A Scottish and Irish tradition where you share a drink (usually a blend of two drinks of the couples choosing) from a two handled cup as a symbol of unity. Such a lovely, intimate moment to include! It's fun to see which two drinks couples choose to blend together.
Personal vows: Whether you write them yourself or work with your celebrant to craft them together, personal vows are always my favourite part of any elopement ceremony.
LGBTQ+ Ceremonies: Dunluce Castle is a place for every couple, full stop! The team are incredibly welcoming and are proud allies, and every vendor, including celebrants I work with and recommend is fully LGBTQ+ inclusive. You deserve to be and will be celebrated and supported by every single person involved in your day.
Do You Need a Celebrant?
You don't have to have a celebrant at your Dunluce ceremony! Some couples choose to lead the ceremony themselves, or have a close friend or family member take on the role, and that can be really special and incredibly personal. There are genuinely no rules here and no correct way to do it!
That said, I do personally recommend working with a professional celebrant. A good celebrant adds so much structure and warmth to a ceremony, and most importantly they take the pressure off you both so you can actually be present and enjoy every single second of it. They'll guide you through the whole thing and make sure it flows beautifully from start to finish. When you're standing on that cliff with the Atlantic behind you and the nerves are kicking in, having someone experienced and calm leading you through it makes the world of difference! Your options really are limitless though, and whatever feels most like you is always going to be the right choice.
Finding the Right Celebrant
Finding the right celebrant for your Dunluce elopement is such a personal thing! The best fit really depends on your personalities, the kind of ceremony you're envisioning, and the overall tone you want for your day. A great celebrant will make you feel completely at ease, bring so much warmth and intention to your ceremony, and take all the pressure off you both so you can just be fully present in the moment.
I have a small list of celebrants I absolutely love and trust on the North Coast, people I've worked alongside at Dunluce and know will make your ceremony feel really special. I share these recommendations with every couple I work with, so when we connect you'll have access to all of that! In the meantime, the Humanist UK is a brilliant place to start your research if you want to get a feel for what a humanist ceremony looks and feels like.

Where to stay for your dunluce castle elopement

Where you stay during your Dunluce elopement is such an underrated part of the planning process! It's where your day begins, where you'll get ready, where you'll come back to after the most incredible few hours of your life, and depending on the space, it can actually become a really beautiful part of your photography too. So it's worth giving it a little more thought than just finding somewhere convenient!
How Far Should You Stay From Dunluce?
My biggest piece of advice here is to stay no further than 30 minutes from the North Coast. On your elopement day you really don't want a big drive before or after your ceremony! Keeping your accommodation close just makes everything so much more relaxed and gives you a much more flexible timeline on the day. And honestly, the Causeway Coast has so many beautiful places to stay that you really don't have to compromise!
Portrush
Portrush is the obvious choice and for good reason! It's only about 10 minutes from Dunluce, it has brilliant restaurants and bars, a gorgeous beach, and just a really great atmosphere especially in the evenings. If you're bringing guests, it's probably your most practical base. There are loads of hotel options to suit different budgets and everyone can easily meet up for dinner without anyone having to travel far afterwards.
Just worth knowing though, Portrush gets really busy during the summer and certain holiday periods. Easter is a big one when locals head up to their caravans and the town fills up fast. The North West 200 in May brings huge crowds to the whole area too. And if The Open is being held at Royal Portrush during your visit, just know the whole area will be completely packed and prices will be really high! So if your dates overlap with any of these, book early or advoid these dates altogether!
One other thing to consider if you're staying in a hotel room in Portrush is that hotel rooms aren't always the most inspiring getting ready space! The light and decor can be a bit generic, which isn't always ideal for those morning photos. It might actually be worth renting a separate Airbnb just for getting ready, even if your guests are staying in a hotel nearby. Best of both worlds!
Finding the Perfect Airbnb
This is where I'd really encourage you to splash out a little if your budget allows! A beautiful Airbnb can completely transform your elopement experience. Think of it as way more than just somewhere to sleep. It's your getting ready space, your backup location if the weather isn't playing ball, and potentially a really stunning photography setting in its own right!
When you're searching, natural light is so important, especially for getting ready photos. But beyond just light, the overall feel of the space really matters too. An all white fairly basic interior might not give you the most interesting images! Something with a bit more character, exposed stone walls, warm moody tones, interesting textures, a really curated feel, will just look so much more beautiful in photos and feel so much more special to actually be in on your wedding morning.
A property with a bit of land or a pretty garden is such a bonus too! It gives you the option of a first look, a sheltered outdoor space to use without going anywhere, and just so many more opportunities for beautiful natural moments. Some of my favourite elopement images have been taken in the simplest spaces, like a garden, or a window with the right light. Having that at your accommodation just gives you so much more to work with!
A Few Areas Worth Exploring
Bushmills is literally 4 minutes from Dunluce and it's such a special little village! It's home to the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery and the iconic Bushmills Inn, which is such a gorgeous option if you want somewhere with real character and cosiness. It tends to be much quieter than Portrush and just has that tucked away feeling that suits an elopement day so well.
Ballycastle is about 20 minutes from Dunluce and is such a beautiful, less touristy town with a really lovely local feel. A brilliant base if you're also planning to visit Carrick-a-Rede or explore further east along the coast!
Portstewart is a quieter alternative to Portrush, about 15 minutes from Dunluce, with a stunning strand and such a lovely atmosphere. Worth considering if you want the convenience of being close to everything without being right in the middle of a busy town!
Wherever you end up staying, just make sure it's somewhere that actually excites you! Your accommodation is such a big part of the whole experience and you deserve somewhere you'll love coming back to at the end of the most amazing day!
How Long Should You Stay?
I would plan to arrive at least 2 days before your elopement day, and give yourself at least 1 day after. This way you'll feel more settled and relaxed before the day, and have plenty of time if any issues arise. Staying a couple days after your elopement allows you to have a slow morning the following day. Elopement days are so full of excitement, nerves, adrenaline and sometimes a lot of driving and walking! You will likely feel exhausted the next day, so the last thing you will want to do is panic pack the next morning for an 11am check-out. The Causeway Coast has so much to explore, so I recommend giving yourself enough time to explore everything it has to offer!

What to wear for your dunluce castle elopement

Getting your outfit right for an elopement at Dunluce is so important! It's about finding that sweet spot between looking and feeling incredible, while being comfortable enough to actually enjoy every single moment of your day. The cliff can be wild, windy, and the weather is completely unpredictable, and honestly that's what makes it so magical. But being prepared is key here!
Gowns and Dresses
If you're wearing a gown, the one word to keep in mind when shopping is flow. Lightweight fabrics like chiffon and tulle move so beautifully in the coastal breeze and photograph in a way that nothing else really can. There's something about fabric catching the Atlantic wind on a cliff that just can't be recreated anywhere else. But it's important to feel like you can move freely in your gown without feeling bogged down by heavy and restrictive fabrics.
Satin and heavily structured gowns can be a little tricky at Dunluce. They tend to be heavier, and a lot more vulnerable to wet grass and muddy ground. Stains show so easily on satin, and a stiff silhouette can feel a little at odds with the wild landscape around you.
Floor length gowns and long trains are absolutely wearable at Dunluce, but just go in knowing that by the end of the day your hem will have picked up a little evidence of the adventure! For most couples this just becomes part of the story, (I call it the Irish Ombré) and honestly some of the most beautiful images from a Dunluce day involve a mucky train and the castle in the background. If you love the idea of a long train, just embrace it fully and don't stress about it getting dirty. It's worth it, I promise!
Suits and Tailoring
For anyone planning to wear a suit, earthy tones are honestly your best friend at Dunluce. Deep greens, warm browns, rust, reds and camel tones. They all sit so beautifully against the grey stone of the castle and the green of the cliff!
Texture is worth thinking about too. Tweed in particular looks so incredible in this setting, which feels so fitting given it's such a quintessentially Irish fabric. A well fitted tweed suit against a Causeway Coast backdrop is such a powerful image. Linen works beautifully in the warmer months, and a good wool blend is perfect for autumn and winter elopements when you need something that will actually keep you warm as well as look amazing.
Shoes
Shoes are honestly one of the most important practical decisions you'll make for your Dunluce elopement! The viewpoint has uneven ground, and depending on recent weather it can be pretty muddy too. Anything with a thin heel will sink, or just leave you feeling miserable before you've even made it to the ceremony.
Anything with grip, ankle support, and a flat or block sole is your best bet. Hiking boots, riding boots, and wellies all work brilliantly and honestly they look beautiful in photos too, especially against the outdoor setting. If you have your heart set on something more delicate for the ceremony itself, a really easy solution is wearing your practical pair for the walk and swapping into your prettier shoes once you're in position. But even then, stiletto heels are a no go. Opt for a block heel if you must! I still advise against all heels, personally. Comfort is everything. You'll be on your feet for a good chunk of the day, and sore feet will affect your energy and your mood way more than you'd expect!
Bouquets
A bouquet is something I'd genuinely recommend to every couple eloping at Dunluce! On a practical level, having something to hold does so much for nerves in front of the camera. It gives your hands a natural purpose, takes away that "what do I do with my arms" feeling, and honestly helps you settle into being photographed so much faster than you'd think.
Visually, a bouquet just works so beautifully against the landscape. The key is to go organic rather than structured. A tightly rounded formal bouquet can look a little stiff against the wildness of the landscape behind you. A loose, flowing, meadow style arrangement with trailing greenery and florals feels so much more at home on a rugged coastal cliff, and it photographs so well!
Colour is genuinely one area where you have so much creative freedom. The scenery at Dunluce is dramatic enough to hold its own against almost any palette, so just go with whatever feels most like you! I've photographed autumnal bouquets with deep reds and bright summer bouquets with corals and hot pinks, and they all look fabulous!
Hair
Getting your hair done professionally for a Dunluce elopement is something I'd really strongly recommend. This is not a location where a loosely held style is going to survive the day, and the last thing you want to be doing during your vows is fighting with your hair!
Braids and up-dos are by far the most practical choices, especially if there's any wind or rain forecast, which on the Causeway Coast there usually is at least a little of! A good hair stylist who understands the environment will build something secure enough to withstand the elements while still looking absolutely beautiful.
Now on the topic of veils...veils and exposed cliff fields don't always play nicely together! In strong wind a veil can go from romantic to completely chaotic very quickly, getting caught in your hair, tangled mid ceremony, or flying across your face at exactly the wrong moment. (I've also witnessed many veils peace out altogether) If a veil is really important to you we can absolutely make it work for certain shots, but just be prepared to take it off for a lot of the day.
If you love the idea of movement and drama in your look, a flowy cape or overskirt is such a more friendly option! Something that attaches at the shoulders or waist moves so beautifully in the breeze, and won't pull at your hair or get in the way during your vows the way a veil can.
Staying Warm
This one is particularly important because it genuinely affects how much you enjoy your day! Nothing puts a dampener on a Dunluce elopement like being too cold to relax, and no amount of beautiful scenery makes up for shivering and sniffling during your ceremony.
Thermals and thermal tights under your outfit are a complete non-negotiable for anything outside of the warmer summer days. You can find skin-tone coloured thermals or get your hands on the fleeced sheer tights. Hand warmers are also small and cheap and have come in clutch at almost every elopement I've photographed. You can also get larger ones that I often stuff down a dress or under a shirt!
For something that will actually show in photos and still look gorgeous, a chunky Aran knit jumper or a cosy shawl is honestly one of my favourite additions to an elopement look! Aran knitwear just feels like such a natural choice for a North Coast elopement. If you don't already own one, picking one up during your trip is such a lovely way to bring a little piece of Ireland home with you. And if the cold means you genuinely can't take it off for long, that's completely fine! A beautiful knit wrapped around you on a Causeway Coast cliff is such a warm and personal image, and it tells the story of the day exactly as it was. Those are often my favourites!

What to pack for your dunluce castle elopement

Packing for an elopement in Ireland is a bit of an art form. You're essentially preparing for four seasons in one day while also making sure you look incredible in your photos. Here's everything I’d recommend packing ahead of your elopement day.
Rain Prep
A decent waterproof coat is non-negotiable. You don't need to wear it during your ceremony, but having it to throw on before and after means you arrive looking fresh and leave feeling smug. If you're travelling between locations during the day, a sturdy umbrella is a good idea, so make sure your photographer can provide you with some for you and your guests. It’s best to use see-through umbrellas so they don’t cast shadows!
Footwear
This is one of the most important practical decisions you'll make for your Dunluce elopement. The cliff field is grassy, uneven, and can be muddy depending on recent weather. Heels are a firm no. Sturdy footwear like ankle boots, hiking boots, or even wellies are ideal for getting to and from the ceremony spot, and many couples simply swap into their prettier shoes once they're in position for photos, however I still recommend staying in practical footwear at all times. Pack blister plasters because new shoes or hiking boots and a big day are a recipe for sore feet.
Sun Days
Yes, this is actually a thing in Ireland! If you happen to get lucky with a bright day, sunglasses and sunscreen will be genuinely needed, especially if you're spending a few hours out on an exposed headland. Sunscreen is particularly easy to forget when you're thinking "Ireland in October" but it can surprise you!
The Important Stuff
Obvious, but worth a dedicated spot on the list because the adrenaline of the morning is real. Your rings, your vows if you've written them (make sure you have a backup on your phone!) and your wedding attire should be laid out and double checked the night before.
Hot Hair Tools & Steamers
Be mindful that certain hair tools, like a Dyson hairdryer, or steamers purchased in the USA may not work in the UK and Europe due to the different voltages. Check whether or not your tool is dual voltage otherwise you’ll need to either purchase a voltage converter or a cheap hairdryer/steamer once you arrive.
Snacks and Water
You will be more hungry than you expect. between the nerves, the fresh air, and the sheer amount of emotion that goes into an elopement day, your body will need fuel. Pack something easy and non-messy, think cereal bars, fruit, or whatever your go-to comfort snack is. Water is just as important, especially if it turns out to be one of those rare and glorious sunny days.

Example Timelines of a dunluce castle elopement

A couple of months out from your elopement day, I'll send you a detailed questionnaire to start pulling everything together! This covers all of your vendors, what you'd like to include in your ceremony, how you'd like the day to flow, and anything else that's important to you both. From there I build a completely custom timeline, communicating directly with your vendors where needed to make sure everything connects seamlessly.
The number one priority for every elopement I plan is buffer time. I never want you to feel like you're rushing from one thing to the next or watching the clock. Every timeline I put together is designed to give you plenty of breathing room between each part of the day, so you can actually slow down, be present, and soak in every single moment of it.

FAQ

Can Americans legally get married at Dunluce Castle?
Yes! US citizens, and Non-UK citizens can legally get married at Dunluce Castle.
Do you need a permit to elope at Dunluce Castle?
You need to book directly with Dunluce Farm Elopements. Bookings start at £350 and goes up depending on the number of guests or with activities like picnics.
Can you have a ceremony inside the castle ruins?
You cannot have your ceremony inside the castle. The castle itself is managed by the National Trust and is separate from the team who manage the field. You can choose to get photos inside Dunluce Castle, but you must reach out to management before your event & pay a £60 fee. This gives access to the couple plus 10 guests.
What happens if it rains?
It's best to prepare physically and mentally for rain by bringing layers, waterproofs, good shoes and umbrellas. There is no shelter on the field. You can use the cottage as a back-up ceremony location as a last resort.
Can we bring guests?
Absolutely! The field can accommodate larger parties. Pricing varies depending on the number of guests you bring.
What currency is used?
Northern Ireland uses Great British Pounds, as it is a part of the UK. You will need to pay the venue in this currency via bank transfer or cash!
How far in advance should we book?
If you have a specific date in mind and are bringing guests, I would suggest at least a year in advance to avoid disappointment! If you are flexible with dates, it's possible to plan an elopement here with much less time! I would however suggest 6 months minimum!
Will my Northern Ireland marriage be recognised in the US?
Yes! If you choose to go through the legal route for your elopement ceremony, your marriage will be fully legally recognised outside of the UK.
Can we bring children?
Children are welcome! However they must be supervised and closely monitored.
Is Dunluce accessible for people with mobility issues?
The field itself is a natural grassy landscape and can be soft underfoot, with no paved paths or formal accessibility features. However, where the ceremonies take place is mostly flat, even ground, and the good news is you can be driven right up to the viewpoint in a 4x4 truck where there's room for a wheelchair to be folded and transported in the back. For wheelchair users, once you're on the field the terrain is the main challenge, and how manageable that feels will really depend on the individual, the type of wheelchair or mobility aid, and the conditions on the day.
